With those practices and games comes the risk of injuries. If your child is beginning a new sport, it is a good idea to review the best ways to prevent, or prepare for injuries. By putting some preparation into potential sporting accidents, you will be able to navigate your kids more smoothly through a difficult situation.  Here we give a breakdown of safety tips for fall sports: ## Football The ultimate in fall contact sports, football is the leader of school sport injuries. Make sure your player is equipped with a helmet, a plethora of padding, well fitting cleats, and a mouthpiece. Additional options of safety gear include padded neck rolls, gloves, forearm pads, and rib guards. Talk to the team’s coaching staff at the beginning of the season to make sure that they are aware of the warning signs and symptoms of concussions and discuss their safety plans for injuries. ## Field Hockey Any sport with a stick involves the possibility of contact with the body, that’s why field hockey has a lot of gear involved. Your player should be wearing cleats, shin guards, goggles, and mouthguards. For extra coverage, wear gloves to prevent broken fingers or a mask to protect against facial injuries. Goalies have even more gear which include body and arm padding and hand protectors. ## Soccer Soccer is another contact sport with the high potential for injuries. There are many recommended types of protective gear including cleats, shin guards and soccer socks. Goalies wear gloves and body padding. We also recommend wearing a mouthguard. Your player should be taught how to properly head a ball to avoid injury and fair play rules. ## Cheerleading One of the most dangerous sports, cheerleading involves high impact stunts which require precision and strength. In order to minimize the risk of injuries, make sure your cheerleader is practicing with an experienced coach in a facility with proper floor mats. Practice is really the best way to reduce injuries. Ensure your cheerleader is physically prepared for stunts, warmed up the day of, and well practiced with the team. Advise your cheerleader to never try new stunts without supervision and avoid being pressured into a stunt where they aren’t comfortable. ## Additional tips for sports safety include: - Have your player get a pre-sport physical, even if not required by the team, to make sure they are cleared for play - Teach your player about the importance of playing fair and following the direction of referees or coaches - Make sure the coaching staff has your child’s up to date medical and emergency contact info - Ensure a first aid kit is at every game - Make sure your player removes jewelry before play - Bring  plenty of water for players In case of injuries, we recommend downloading our [Contact Card](https://www.drstitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/drstitch.vcf) to your phone. Community events like these can be fun family traditions, but the hustle and bustle can make it easy for children to get lost in the crowd. It doesn’t matter how well-behaved your little one is or how mindful you are, it can take just seconds for kids to become separated from their parents. The team at Dr.STITCH wants your family outings to be fun, safe, and stress-free, so we’ve put together some tips to keep in mind when attending special events. ## Have a Pre-Event Family Meeting We know that getting everyone dressed, ready to go, and out the door on time can be quite a feat. Even if you are anxious to get going, do not skip this important step. Taking just a few minutes before you leave or upon arrival can prevent panic later. - **Take a quick photoshoot:** Having a current photo of your child that shows what they are wearing will be helpful if they do get lost. Ask them to take note of what you are wearing as well. - **Put your phone number on your child:** Even older children who have important numbers memorized can forget when they feel stressed. Make sure it is easy to get in touch with you by putting your phone number where it definitely won’t get lost – their skin! If you’re in a pinch, write your number in marker on their forearm. If you have time to plan ahead, you can order custom temporary tattoos with your information on them. - **Discuss who will be at the event:** Your child should know who to talk to if they can’t find you. Will there be other families you know there? Will there be helpful employees with badges or uniformed police if your child needs assistance? If you are unsure whether event staff will be trained to handle lost children, sometimes it can be best to tell your kids to look for “a parent”. Someone who is pushing a stroller or holding another child’s hand can sometimes have more experience in how to handle the situation. - **Buddy Up:** If you’re in a large group, decide which adult or older kid will hold each small child’s hand and be responsible for keeping an eye on them. - **Designate a meeting spot:** Determine a meeting place that you and your kids can go to if anyone gets separated from your group. Pick an easy-to-find landmark that is well-lit and centrally located. ## Keep Things Light and Bright Getting lost can be extra scary when you are 3 feet tall and you can’t see over the crowd. Consider wearing bright clothing or fun shoes to help your kids differentiate you from everyone in jeans and black shoes. If you’re attending an outdoor event in the evening, get everyone in your family a fun glow in the dark item to help you keep track of each other. If you are using a stroller, put some sort of decoration on yours to stand out from similar ones. ## Be a Prepared Parent You can spend lots of time teaching your child about crowd safety, but don’t forget these guidelines for adults! - Bring a backpack instead of a purse or shopping bag so you can more easily hold your child’s hand. - Keep a small first aid kit with you to bandage up any minor scrapes or cuts. - Pack a portable charger and make sure your ringer is turned on. - If you have multiple children with you and realize one is missing, don’t break up the group. Burn injuries are measured in degrees, depending on the size and depth of the burn. Many people will suffer a first-degree burn at some point in their lives, such as mild sunburn or a small cooking burn which can be treated at home. However, accidents that result in larger or deeper burns, or those that involve chemical or electrical burns, require treatment by medical professionals. ## What To Do When Burn Accidents Happen If you, your child, or someone you know suffers a burn, follow these steps: ## For a First-Degree Burn - Remove any clothing or jewelry from the burned area. If the clothing is stuck to the burn, do NOT pull it away from the skin – if the clothing is tight and stuck to the burn you may need to cut it away while waiting for medical attention. - Run cool water over the burn or immerse the burn in cool water. You may use a clean, cold compress instead of cool water. Do NOT use ice or very cold water. - Apply aloe gel or burn cream. Do NOT put butter, toothpaste, Vaseline, baby powder, coconut oil, or other oils on a burn. Cover the burn with a sterile bandage or gauze. - Elevate the burned area if possible. ## For a Second-Degree Burn - Follow the above steps and then seek immediate medical attention. - Do NOT break any blisters. ## For a Second-Degree Burn - Follow the above steps and then seek immediate medical attention. - Do NOT break any blisters. ## For a Third-Degree Burn Call 911 immediately. Do NOT apply any ointments or water to a third-degree burn. You may loosely cover the burned area with a dry sterile bandage or clean non-linty fabric. ## How Do I Know What Degree A Burn Is? ![](https://www.drstitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/DS-Burn-Degrees-infographic-blog.jpg) **First-Degree** First-degree burns are relatively mild and affect just the top layer of skin. These burns will be red, dry and painful, but will usually not have blisters. Sunburns are typical first-degree burns. **Second-Degree** Second-degree burns go beyond the top layer of skin to affect the second layer, called the dermis. These burns are very painful and appear red and swollen and will often result in blisters. **Third-degree** Third-degree burns destroy the top layers of skin and damage the underlying tissue. These burns can be extremely painful, but may also feel numb. The skin may lose color completely or appear blackened. ## When To Seek Medical Treatment for Burns It can be difficult for someone who is not a medical professional to judge the severity and degree of a burn. If you are unsure, it is always best to err on the side of caution. You should seek immediate medical attention if: - The burn is from chemicals, electrical equipment, or an open flame, even if it appears to be minor - You suspect the burn may be a second or third-degree - The face, hands, or genitals are burned - The skin color is mottled or has changed to white, brown, or black - The skin texture is leathery or quickly blistered - The burn covers more than 10% of the body, even if it appears minor - The burn exhibits signs of infection, such as swelling, discharge or increasing redness Why Call a Plastic Surgeon for Burn Treatment? While there, your doctor will provide you with aftercare instructions. For wounds not covered by a steri-strip, you will need to apply bacitracin ointment to the wound twice a day. Before applying new bacitracin, gently wipe off the old ointment for a clean surface. After 48 hours, the wound may be washed with gentle soap and water. If it is outside office hours, call (516) 504-3014 for assistance. ### Am I allowed to exercise during the healing process? At the time of your treatment, ask your doctor. The level of physical activity will depend on the size and location of the wound. ### Is it okay if my wound gets wet? It is not recommended to fully submerge your wound in a bath or go swimming, however it can get wet in the shower. ### Do I need to get my stitches removed? There are two types of sutures: one kind dissolves and the other kind needs to be removed. Your doctor will inform you which one is used on your wound. ### How can I improve the appearance of a scar? Once your wound has fully healed, be sure to apply a mild sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, or cover the area whenever it is exposed to the sun. Unfortunately, studies report that more than 40,000 children are injured in the bathtub each year.1 Since Dr.STITCH is dedicated to helping you keep your family safe, check out our safety tips below for safer tub time with little ones: ## The Most Important Part of Bath Time: Your Attention Parenthood is a busy endeavor in which you are often pulled in many different directions at once. But at bath time, your kids need your undivided attention. In only a moment, children can have tragic accidents in even just a few inches of water, so it is critical that bath time is 100% supervised. If possible, plan to give baths when 2 adults are in the house so that the parent on bath duty can remain distraction-free. If you are parenting solo during bath time, let the doorbell ring and the phone go unanswered. If you do need to leave the bathroom, give little ones a quick towel-off and take them with you. You may enjoy relaxing in a steamy hot bath, but young children have much more sensitive skin than adults. Bath water should be warm, but not hot. Consider adding a safety lock to the hot water tap to prevent curious toddlers from scalding themselves. ## Accessories for a Safer Bath Tub A few specialized bath safety items can help you keep bath time as relaxing and fun as possible: - A rubber mat or textured decals in the tub and a large, non-slip mat outside the tub can help prevent falls. - A cushioned cover for the bathtub faucet can keep youngsters from bumping their heads on the faucet. - A tub guard or bathtub bumper that sits on the edge of the tub can prevent little ones from bumping their heads and will also cushion your elbows during bath time. - A few fun bath toys can help you in encouraging kids to stay seated in the bath; dry toys after use and discard any that become cracked or molded. He climbs anything he can find and happily jumps off without fear. I always say that one of these jumps is going to land him in the ER. Well, ironically enough, that is not what landed us in the ER just a few days ago. My son innocently tripped over his own feet while running toward our house to go inside for dinner. He landed, head first, into the corner of the stone steps leading into the back door. I was in shock when I saw his head. I immediately picked him up, put him in the car, and I drove him to Huntington Hospital. Having never been in this situation before, I wasn’t exactly sure what to do. When they brought us to a room, the nurse had asked me if I wanted a plastic surgeon to stitch my son and that is when I had remembered an ad I saw for Dr. STITCH while I was at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group’s Deep Blue Med Spa. I googled the number and immediately called them explaining my situation. It just so happened that they already had a plastic surgeon at the hospital for another child and that surgeon walked into our room while I was making this call. Since safety is our top priority, we must point out that there are also a number of risks specific to the winter months. Because most of us will be spending more time than usual at home this season, it is important to safely plan activities that keep us and our families entertained. Enjoy all that winter has to offer while keeping your loved ones safe with these Winter Safety Tips from the experts at Dr.STITCH. ### Take Fire Safety Seriously When temperatures drop outside, it’s time to get cozy inside. However, before you start a fire in the fireplace or wood stove, or even light your favorite scented candle, make sure to address fire safety with the entire family: - Children should be kept away from any flames - Candles should be on stable surfaces away from flammable fabrics or paper - Safety grates should always be used with fireplaces or wood stoves - Make sure your home is equipped with up-to-date smoke alarms and fire extinguishers Take advantage of the extra time at home this year to review your family’s fire safety plan, including practicing your fire and emergency exit and meetup plan, which the U.S. Fire Administration advises doing twice a year.1 ### Play Safe The childhood call of winter is “snowball fight!” Be sure to teach your kids to toss around only soft powdery snow. Icy or hard packed snow balls can cause painful and dangerous facial cuts and lacerations. If sledding is your idea of winter outdoor fun, make sure to choose a spot that is not too steep and ends in a flat runoff far away from cars. Always sled feet first and of course, be sure to bundle up! ### Work Safe Avoid slips and falls by keeping all walkways and stairs cleared of snow and properly treated with ice melt (look for pet-safe ice melt to protect your four-legged friends.) When using a snowblower, follow all instructions and never try to manually clear clogs while the machine is on. ### Be Mindful With Electricity When there is a chill in the air, many of us rely on space heaters or electric blankets to warm up. Her mom took her to PM Pediatrics, where they recommended she call Dr.STITCH. “I was told by PM Pediatrics they could not stitch up my 2-year-old daughter, saying the wound was too jagged. They explained the Dr.Stitch service. I was hesitant, so they also told me I could go to my local ER. I decided to call Dr.Stitch and spoke with Amy who was very helpful. She was able to get back to me within 10 minutes and told me a surgeon was just getting out of surgery and was going to wait for me at the hospital he was in. Although it was about a half-hour drive to that specific hospital, the service was great. My daughter was called back into a room before I could even register her in the ER. The field was all set up and the doctor was ready to go. He stitched her up pretty quickly. I got in and out of that hospital in 45 minutes. I imagine I would have had to wait much longer had I just went to my local ER. While Halloween can be an epic adventure, it’s important to prioritize childrens’ safety during this festive time of year. So how can you make sure your children enjoy a safe and happy Halloween? Follow these five Halloween safety tips for kids. ## 1\. Make Costumes Bright and Reflective If your children are planning to trick-or-treat at night, especially from home to home, having a bright and reflective costume can make your little ones visible to drivers and other groups of trick or treaters. If your child’s costume does not have reflective elements you can add small pieces of reflective tape without interfering with the costume design. ## 2\. Make Sure Children Cross Streets at Crosswalks Kids love to run wild any time, but the excitement and sugar rush of Halloween can increase the rambunctiousness! It is easy to get distracted as kids dart from house to house, however even in the safest neighborhoods it’s important to make sure children follow traffic safety rules to avoid accidents. Teaching children to cross the street at designated stop signs or crosswalks can help keep your family safe this Halloween. ## 3\. Minimize Cell Phone Use This one is for both parents and children! Digital distractions can be dangerous for kids and for the grownups watching out for them. Having your cell phone in case of an emergency is always a good idea, but save the Candy Crush and texting for another time. If you snap photos of your little monsters in action, wait until you get home to post them. Being aware of what is going on around you is critical for keeping everyone safe. ## 4\. Check Candy Before They Eat While the odds of your child being handed tampered-with candy are pretty low, it’s best to make sure all candy is factory-wrapped and sealed. Toss any candy that was accidentally ripped open or looks suspicious. If your children have any food allergies, you can also filter out the items that they can’t have (and put a few of your favorites aside for yourself!) ## 5\. Use Safe Tools When Carving Pumpkins Carving pumpkins is one of the most creative and fun ways to celebrate Halloween, but with sharp objects and lit candles, it can also be hazardous. If you plan on carving with your kiddos, consider using a pumpkin carving kit to make the activity safer. Make sure your kids are old enough to handle cutting tools safely and responsibly, and always supervise the activity. Additionally, using electric candles can help eliminate any fire hazards. The R Family rang in the New Year with Dr. George in the ER as Emmy received 29 stitches! “We decided to take a few days and take the family to beautiful Old Quebec city. We arrived on Dec 30th around 5 pm to a picturesque hotel with a beautiful lake 10 mins out of the old city, the drive was roughly 9 hours from Garden City, NY. Sunday night we walked around the city and couldn’t wait to ice skate the next day on the lake. On New Year’s Eve we went out to skate. My 15-year-old Sophie (former Dr.STITCH Patient – 2017) skated with her 13-year-old brother Chip (former Dr.STITCH patient 2009), I skated with my 11-year-old daughter Jacqueline (former 2 x Dr.STITCH patient). Our youngest Emmy (8 years old) skated with my husband Chris. After about two hours we saw Emmy tumble from a ways away and Chris quickly picked Emmy up, she had a bad gash from her fall right under her chin. At that moment we experienced what all US Citizens should think about before the next election, socialized medicine. The Quebec Hospital was nearby, there were very friendly and helpful nurses. Ironically, not one doctor was available and we were told there would not be one for 8 more hours that day. A helpful nurse cleaned Emmy’s cut. Chris and I decided to drive the 8 hours home rather than wait in the hospital. We knew she needed a good plastic surgeon for her cut since it was on her face. I immediately called Dr.STITCH’s number and spoke to Ali. She said to call back when we were 2 hours away. Luckily Chris drove with a vengeance and we made it home within 8.5 hours. I called when we were around 2 hours away and Ali was there to give me good news, Dr. George would meet us at the hospital. We just needed to call her again when we were in the parking lot. We tried to get Emmy ready and looked up Dr. George on the site, which made her very comfortable when she finally met him. True to her word, we called Ali once we were at Winthrop, and sure enough, Dr. George met Chris and Emmy in the pediatric ER. They rang in the New Year with Dr. George and 29 new stitches! We are grateful and lucky to have had good experiences with Dr.STITCH in the past, and can now say that all four of our children have been treated successfully by several of the doctors in the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. I would advise any parent to keep the [number in their contacts](https://www.drstitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/drstitch.vcf), it was a relief to know that we knew the drill and although we had a long drive from Quebec to Winthrop, we would be treated by a top-notch group no matter how long it took us to get there! We went to the hospital checked in through the E.R., gave the doctors name and we sat until the doctor arrived. Once he arrived, he placed us in a room he was able to stitch my son’s forehead up. I called Dr.STITCH and the lady on the phone was polite, informative, and knowledgeable. She explained to me that I am to go to the E.R. of Southside Hospital, call her & tell her I’m there, and Dr. Pinsky would come out and get me. Dr. Pinsky was very nice, explained everything, sutured my finger so quickly and painlessly that if I wasn’t looking I wouldn’t know that is was done. The experience made me very relaxed. He lost his footing and smacked the back of his head on the way down, which resulted in a lot of blood and a nice cut. I immediately texted my friend and asked her what I should do. She texted me the number to Dr. STITCH, as she also used them in the past. I called the Dr. STITCH hotline and they told us to make our way to Winthrop ER with a certain time reference. We only waited about an hour or so to see Dr. Natoli. She was amazing! She explained what she was doing every step of the way and stitched up the cut in 10 minutes. The entire process was easy and in the end I was really happy that my son was getting “fixed up” by a plastic surgeon. I was enjoying a Saturday morning at the splash park when my three-year-old son, my only child, slipped and sliced his chin open. The lifeguards said he was fine, but I just couldn’t get past how deep it looked. Thankfully, my sister, who is a PA and a mom herself, was there and looked at it. She said, “Call Doctor Stitch”— I’m like, “who?!” Dr.STITCH is an on-call service through NY Plastic Surgical Group that provides actual plastic surgeons for traumatic injuries such as the one my son had. The woman on the phone Jenny was the sweetest person and kept me calm in an extremely stressful situation that I as the mama HAD to stay calm in for my little guy. Within seconds she sent me a text seeking photos of the injury that she forwarded to the on-call physician. It literally took 2-3 minutes, and she confirmed the doctor said he likely needed stitches and arranged for us to meet at the closest emergency room. She called ahead to the ER and simply told us to get there ASAP. I didn’t have to think about anything except comforting my son and preparing him for what was to come (me, him and my husband even exchanged “stitches stories” on the way to the hospital lol even my father (another PA!) showed up at the ER as well and my son says, “Papa what is your stitches story?!”. I believe the reason my son was able to relax is because I was relaxed and that was fully due to the efforts of the Dr Stitch team! What was even more amazing and heartwarming was that Jenny took the time to call me on our way to the ER to address my question in the text conversation we had about how he would sit still for stitches. She gave me the rundown of what to expect, shared her experience with her own son when this happened, and told me if I needed anything she was there. We got to the ER and everything felt seamless. Dr. Michael Christy came in and his calm demeanor was contagious. He warmly explained how everything would work and introduced himself to my son. He was so nice and just had a humble and kind air about him (not rushed or conceited as some doctors can be). He had a bedside manner like no other and that’s necessary in a situation like this. His work was quick and precise. He remained calm as we all worked to soothe my son and he was absolutely incredible. I called the office on a Sunday morning. The receptionist answered right away and was so helpful and reassuring. She said I could text photos to have the doctor review to see if stitches were even necessary before wasting my time and having my son sit in an ER for no reason. Within a few minutes, I received a call back from her with such specific details about where to go and what time to arrive and that the hospital was already aware we were coming and waiting for us. I walked into the ER with low expectations and was blown away when I gave them my name and the said, “Yes, we received a call you were coming and we’re all set”. We were very blessed that Dr. George was available the day our daughter was injured. Our precious daughter had a wound above her eye that required 3 stitches. We were very concerned because she’s a young girl and the wound was visible over her eye. Dr. George’s calming demeanor helped put my wife at ease. Our daughter, Vanessa, was very comfortable with Dr. George. Dr. George explained everything thoroughly and was very helpful in informing us what we could do at home to minimize scarring. Dr.STITCH was great! After my son split his lip, we went to the local ER where they examined us and said we needed to be seen by a plastic surgeon, which the hospital did not have. It was a Saturday night, we had already been in the ER for some time and I did not know where to go from there. A family member told me about Dr.STITCH, so I decided to give it a try. The coordinator I spoke with was very lovely, she collected all of our information and told us she would give us a call right back to let us know where to meet the physician. Within minutes we were on our way to the hospital to meet Dr. Reish. Everything in the hospital was handled smoothly and we were there for less than an hour. Dr. Reish was very calming, quick and efficient. He stitched my son’s lip and was very happy to answer all of our questions. We had a follow up in 1 week and also, the team at Dr.STITCH reached out to us to see how my son was doing. I have already told many family members and friends about the great care we received.
